How Much Is a Missed Call Costing Your Shop?

October 29, 2026•3 min read

You already know it happens. You're under a house, up a ladder, or elbow-deep in a panel, and the phone rings in your pocket. By the time you can call back, that homeowner has already booked somebody else.

The question isn't whether missed calls cost you jobs. It's how many — and what they're worth. Here's the two-minute math, with your own numbers.

Do the math on your own shop

Take last week and count honestly:

  1. How many calls came in? Check your phone's call log, not your memory.

  2. How many did nobody answer live? Count the ones that hit voicemail while you were on a job, driving, eating lunch, or closed for the day.

  3. What's one average job worth to you? Not your biggest job — your typical service call or install.

Now multiply. If you missed 5 calls last week and your average job is $450, that's $2,250 of work that rang your phone and went somewhere else — if every one of them was a real customer. Say only half were. That's still over $1,100 a week, and north of $50,000 a year, walking to the shop down the road.

Most owners who do this math are surprised it's that big. The calls don't feel like losses because you never knew they existed.

Where the calls actually go

Missed calls cluster in predictable places:

  • Nights and weekends — when a pipe bursts or the AC quits at 9 PM, nobody leaves a voicemail and waits until Monday. They call the next name on Google.

  • While you're on a job — the better your work, the longer you're away from the phone.

  • The lunch-and-drive gaps — fifteen unanswered minutes is all it takes.

And here's the part that stings: a caller who reaches a live answer — any live answer — usually stops shopping. A caller who reaches voicemail usually doesn't.

The fix that runs itself

You can't answer the phone from under a house. But your business can still answer every call:

  • Missed-call text-back: the second a call goes unanswered, the caller gets a text — "Sorry we missed you, how can we help?" The conversation starts before they dial your competitor.

  • A 24/7 AI receptionist: nights, weekends, and mid-job, a caller reaches a trained voice that takes the job details and gets them to you — not a voicemail box nobody checks.

That's the bundle we set up first for every shop we work with, because it plugs the leak before anything else matters. Reviews, ads, and a prettier website all pour water into the bucket. This fixes the hole in the bottom.

What it costs to fix vs. what it costs not to

Run your math from the top of this post one more time. If missed calls are costing you even one average job a month, the fix pays for itself many times over — our Founding 5 pilot for Putnam County trade businesses starts at $47/month for missed-call recovery, set up by a local family business that's been in the trades since 1999.

Five pilot spots, and when they're gone, they're gone.
